Joey Alexander

The Joey Alexander Trio

Joey Alexander feat. Ulysses Owens Jr. and Dan Chmielinski

The Loop Jazz Club, Hybernia Theater,

The rising star experienced his first performance broadcast live at this year’s Grammys.  He wasn’t just there to play though as Joey also had nominations to win in two categories – one for “Best improvised jazz solo” with “Giant Steps” and the other for his debut album “My Favorite Things” (with Montéma) in the “Best jazz instrumental album” category. All this at just 12 years of age.  Certainly fellow artists could be forgiven for being just a little jealous. Born in Bali, Indonesia he started learning the piano at just 6 years of age and went on to record his first album (My Favorite Things) at 11. A breakthrough came in 2014 when a New York Times article wrote about his Jazz at the Lincoln Center’s gala performance. This meant almost overnight success for the young talent.  He has performed for the likes of Herbie Hancock, Bill Clinton as well as Wynton Marsalis plus played at a range of venues including festivals such as Montreal and Newport.

All this was understandably a little bit too much at once, especially at such a tender age, and so Joey’s parents have decided to put the brakes on. This meant cancelling his European concerts planned for this year. But we’re delighted to say we were fortunate enough to salvage his Prague Proms performance and you too will have the opportunity to experience it first-hand. By the time we get to see Joey, he’ll be a fully-fledged thirteen year old.
