Ian Underwood

Ian recorded and performed (keyboards, saxes, clarinet and flute) with Zappa’s Mothers of Invention and subsequent Zappa bands from 1967-1973. Ian has performed on many of Zappa’s albums, including "We're Only in it for the Money," "Cruising With Ruben & the Jets," "Uncle Meat," "Hot Rats," "Burnt Weeny Sandwich" and the movie 200 Motels.

Ian has been a studio musician since 1974 and recorded albums and film soundtracks with Quincy Jones, Barbra Streisand, John Williams (Close Encounters of the Third Kind), Dave Grusin (Three Days of the Condor, Heaven Can Wait, Tootsie), John Corigliano (Altered States), Maurice Jarre (Witness), and James Horner (Field of Dreams, Braveheart, Apollo 13, Beautiful Mind, Iris, Titanic, Avatar, The Amazing Spiderman), among others. He graduated from Yale with a BA in composition in 1961 and completed a Master’s degree in composition at UC Berkeley in 1966.
